OUR APPROACH TO KNOWLEDGE

Explore the science behind healthy forests

At the Healthy Forests Foundation, we believe good decisions grow from good information. Whether you’re a land manager, student, volunteer, or simply curious, this section is your gateway to understanding the science that shapes forest health and resilience.

Here, we bring together reliable, peer-reviewed research, traditional knowledge shared by First Nations communities, and thoughtful science writing to support better outcomes for Country, climate, and community. We also recognise that science isn’t just the domain of professionals—everyday Australians are helping build the evidence base through citizen science and on-the-ground observations.

This library is organised by topic to help you explore what matters most to you—whether it’s fire management, forest regeneration, biodiversity, cultural knowledge, or climate resilience. For each topic, you’ll find a mix of:

  • Research summaries – Clear, accessible breakdowns of recent scientific papers that inform our work.
  • Science in context – Opinion pieces, explainer articles, and insights from leading thinkers in forest science and conservation.
  • Topical webpages and explainers – Simple guides that help unpack key concepts and challenges.
  • Essays – Longer-form reflections and analysis from both in-house writers and external contributors.
  • Success stories – Examples of what’s working, drawn from projects and organisations across Australia.

Learning from forests, people & place

We believe research should be transparent, accessible and grounded in both science and lived experience. The articles below reflect that.

The Healthy Forests Foundation respectfully acknowledges Aboriginal people as the First Peoples and Traditional Custodians of the land and water on which we rely. We also pay our respects to ancestors and Elders, past, present and emerging.

First Nations people have actively cared for and managed Australian landscapes for millennia. The Healthy Forests Foundation is committed to tangible partnerships with First Nations people to ensure their Knowledge influences our practices and that our activities reinforce their Custodianship and assist them in caring for Country.
