Bird flu: message for Djidi djidi members

Werte fellow Djidi djidi network members.

We have many Totems and associated animals important to all our mob across Australia.

As responsible Culturally connected peoples we must be aware of the impending threat from ‘Bird Flu’.

This flu can be transmitted from birds to other animals, especially those that feed on carrion (dead animals) such as our raptor species (eagles),  quolls and our domestic dogs and cats.

Animals like quolls can be quite vulnerable to catching this virus if it spreads beyond water birds. The transmission could wipe out vulnerable species and leave us with only a memory of what we had, not dissimilar to past events of disease and human intervention.

At the moment the flu is within waterbirds, but this can change very quickly.

What can we do?

Pass on the messages from authorities to support the prevention of spread. We can help our community be aware of the signs and know what to do in the event of coming across a dead or sick birds and animals.
